United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres offers his condolences on the death of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar
The United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed the passing of Queen of Melody Lata Mangeshkar, calling the “nightingale of India” the voice of the subcontinent, according to his spokesman Farhan Haq.
Haq said on Sunday: “This is sad news! The SG (Secretary General) sends her condolences to her family, to the people and to the government of India at this time. She was the voice of an entire subcontinent.
India’s permanent representative, TS Tirumurti, called his death an “irreplaceable loss”.
“An irreplaceable loss to the nation. An irreplaceable loss to the music world. Bharat Ratna #LataMangeshkar will live on in our hearts forever,” he said in a tweet.
He also retweeted a message of condolence from the President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, who said Mangeshkar’s music crosses cultural boundaries.
Solih tweeted: “Saddened to hear of the passing of #LataMangeshkar. His music has crossed cultural and linguistic boundaries and continues to bring joy to millions around the world. India has lost a national treasure and I offer my condolences to his loved ones and to the Indian people.
