CAIRO – October 2, 2021: The UN Security Council on Thursday unanimously supported the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until January 31, 2022, the president of the Security Council, Irish Ambassador to the United Nations Geraldine Byrne Nason, said after the council vote.

By adopting the resolution, submitted by the United Kingdom, the Security Council “decides to extend until January 31, 2022, the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, as a special political mission. integrated to carry out its mandate, ”says the text of the document.

UNSMIL will therefore continue to support the country’s transitional authorities in view of the 2021 general elections scheduled in Libya on December 24.

Elections are scheduled for December 24, 70 years to the day since Libya declared independence in 1951. But critical work remains to be done, within six months, including the preparation of legal and constitutional frameworks for the vote.

Instability, fighting and foreign interference have proliferated in Libya since the ouster and murder of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
