The meeting followed three informal ‘integration dialogues’ held throughout June, in which the functional committees and expert bodies of the council identified policy options and presented examples of integrated policies. action.
Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, said lagging immunization rates in poor countries pose a major risk to recovery from the pandemic, and the majority of people pushed into extreme poverty are women and girls.
“We need urgent actions to stop the pandemic, minimize the social impact and get back on track to implement the 2030 Agenda,” he stressed, adding that “better recovery” requires global solidarity and a multilateral approach that favors enhanced cooperation.
The UN has also stressed the need to design gender sensitive policies. Speakers at the Economic and Social Council meeting said the priority should be to ensure “no one is left behind”.
