Statement by Mr. Ramanathan Balakrishnan, United Nations Resident Coordinator and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator, on the killing of a World Health Organization staff member.

The United Nations in Myanmar is deeply saddened by the death of Mr. Myo Min Htut, a staff member of the World Health Organization, during a security incident in Mawlamyine Township, Mon State. . Mr. Myo Min Htut worked for the World Health Organization as a driver for almost 5 years and the United Nations sends its deepest condolences to his family.

Mr. Myo Min Htut was shot while riding his own motorbike on Thanlwin Uyin Road at around 5 p.m. on June 8, 2022. The exact circumstances of the incident currently remain unclear.

Condemning the murder of United Nations personnel, Mr. Ramanathan Balakrishnan, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar said: “The United Nations calls on all parties and stakeholders to respect the neutrality of the United Nations and humanitarian organizations and call on all parties to protect the rights and safety of civilians and strongly condemn acts of violence against civilians. The United Nations expects an impartial investigation into the incident and that the perpetrators be held accountable.

He further added, “In these difficult times, against all odds, the United Nations continues to stand and provide essential humanitarian and development support to the people of Myanmar.”
