Photos of Bill Clinton and Bernie Sanders at Biden’s inauguration make the rounds on social media
It remains unclear whether President Joe Biden will truly be able to unify such a deeply divided country. Still, no matter which side of the aisle you are on, you have to admit that on Wednesday there was still some humor to be found based on what has been posted on social media since the inauguration.
Countless photos circulated on Twitter of new President Biden on Wednesday afternoon, but a few that were posted on social media did not represent President Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.
Instead, a former president and a former presidential hopeful may have stolen the show.
Wake up Bill
First there were the photos of President Bill Clinton apparently dozing off during Biden’s speech.
@ mayorofohio420 was among those who quickly tweeted: “LMAO BILL CLINTON’S SLEEPING DURING BIDEN’S SPEECH”
@STFguitar added, “Someone is waking Clinton up. Guys are sleeping during another grand opening like it’s September or something.”
@mrsmehta was perfect with the sneaky dig, “What’s the matter? Either he’s sleepy or he’s sleeping!”
Even the official UK tabloid Twitter account The Daily Mail (@DailyMail) targeted President 42, “Bill Clinton appears to be falling asleep at Biden’s inauguration”
Then there was the photo of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) sitting alone with his legs crossed, appearing to be his jovial self. Many on Twitter and Facebook quickly noted that he certainly took social distancing seriously while of course he was mocked endlessly.
@jacobinmag suggested, “when centrism is too much.”
The Vermont Democratic socialist has been lightly teased for apparently sitting down on his own while trying to stay warm. Even the folks for Bernie (@ People4Bernie) got in on the act, posting, “Contest of Legend”
However, a caption that might not have been so liked came from @BanquoDyar, who said, “When you have fewer friends in DC than Ted Cruz.”
Nicolas Heller (@NuevaYorkNico) showed off his Photoshop skills and posted edited photos of Sanders with great effect, “I’m asking for hand warmers again. (Done by me and @naomiotsu)”
@ExResurgam took it a step further by promoting Senator Sanders’ platform showing a retouched photo with lawmakers at a “Medicare For All” registration table.
@HistoryMuppet also used Photoshop and put Sanders on the balcony of The Muppets show replacing rowdy Statler alongside the equally sarcastic Waldorf with the caption: “If I wanted to sit down and watch a bunch of bad routines, I would go back to Congress!”
@ Bloodyj4ck not only mocked the photo, but also called the cost of the clothes worn by the Democratic Socialist at Wednesday’s event “too drip”, suggesting an outfit that could have set back the senator about $ 2,500 – but that’s probably the whole thing costs a lot less.
Then there was the pop culture store Vulture (@vulture), which targeted Sanders posture and his choice of mittens, “The post. The mittens. Social distancing.”
However, there was actually quite a bit more to the story of Sanders’ mittens, according to BuzzFeed political reporter Ruby Cramer (@rubycramer), who tweeted: “Bernie’s mittens are made by Jen Ellis, a school teacher. ‘Essex Junction, Vermont. She gave them to him over 2 years ago and was surprised when he started wearing them during the election campaign. They are made from recycled wool sweaters and fleece lined made from recycled plastic bottles. “
These tweets might not do much to heal, but they showed that many can find humor at a time when we can all laugh.
