Mitchell’s Mandate on High-Risk Vaccines for New Bedford Employees
Benefactors among us continue to lecture others on how they should respond to the COVID health crisis. The last weapon they use is a vaccination warrant to try and force the reluctant to take a jab. Why? Because they, the beneficent ones, think it is better. It doesn’t matter what you think.
Mad New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered businesses, including restaurants, bars, health clubs, theaters, and more, to deny entry to anyone who cannot prove that she is vaccinated. This mandate includes employees. Keep in mind that many of those same companies barely survived de Blasio’s tolerance for “peaceful protests” and Dr Feelgood Cuomo’s crushing COVID-19 shutdown last year.
Walmart, Disney and many other private employers have started demanding that workers be vaccinated or quit their jobs. Politicians from the White House to town halls and town halls do the same.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell has ordered many public employees to be vaccinated. The order includes the police, firefighters, the public infrastructure department and city hall employees, but school department and port authority employees are exempt. The New Bedford School Board and the New Bedford Port Authority Board set their own policies. Mitchell’s order, which still lacks details, appears to mirror that issued by Joe Biden for federal employees.
Unions question the legality of mandatory vaccination orders for employees. They wonder if members may be forced to take a vaccine that has not yet received full federal approval. Some admit that opt-outs for medical or religious reasons could provide the coverage employers need.
This practice is controversial at best and may not be legal. Children are required to be re-vaccinated against polio and to have other vaccines to attend public schools, but that was through an act of Congress. In other words, it has been debated and made law. The president of Walmart or the mayor of New Bedford may not have this authority unilaterally. What if the vaccine that has not yet been approved proves problematic? Are the governments and private employers who commissioned him accountable?
Mayor Mitchell and the rest of them need to get on their bloody horses and slow down a bit. Shutting down churches, businesses and schools was bad enough, but it enters a whole new dimension of government control.
