Arklow hires three brown interns at the United Nations
As it did in 2020, Arklow made an appearance this summer at Monmouth Park in the United Nations Stake (G1T). It is his preparation that differs this year for the race on July 17.
Last July, after the Camber horse had run sixth in the TVG Elkorn Stakes (G2T) during a week-long summer meet at KeenelandCoach Brad Cox returned Arklow with less than a week off to compete in New Jersey. Sent off as the 6-5 crowd’s choice in the 1 3/8 mile turf contest, Arklow was slow to get going and only got a fourth place finish.
This year brings more typical Cox preparation, with Arklow fresh for Saturday’s $ 500,000 race after winning the Louisville Stakes (G3T) at Churchill Downs on May 15 in the 7-year-old’s seasonal debut.
“He raced at the UN last year. I don’t know if that was one of the worst coaching moves I’ve ever done. I brought him back six days after the Keeneland race.” , said Cox, the Eclipse award-winning trainer. of 2020. “We had a bit of a weird schedule last year. You know, look, he was fourth as a favorite. It couldn’t have been too bad a place as a favorite.
“After that, we put the blinders on. It really seemed to wake him up. He’s only been beaten in the Breeders’ Cup since.”
The runner owned by Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger and Estate of Peter Coneway is expected to be a force on Saturday. The veteran activist faces a trio of interns from Chad Brown in Masterpiece , Serve the king , and Tribhuvan -more six other rivals.
None of these enemies, however, can match Arklow’s $ 2.7 million bankroll. The son of Camber has won graduated stakes five years in a row, including the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes (G1T) in 2019.
Arklow carries 124-pound jockey Florent Geroux and co-highweight on Saturday, spotting most of the opposition weight. He breaks off the rail.
Tribhuvan (toronade ) also carries 124 pounds, having won the Fort Marcy Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park May, the 1st. But it was his follow-up loss after that victory that was probably his best career performance.
Allowed to run free in the lead with hot fractions in the 1 1/4 mile Resorts World Casino Manhattan Stakes (G1T) at Belmont, he outlasted all of his rivals except Domestic expenditure , the highest rated turf horse in North America in the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings.
Flavien Prat, aboard Domestic Spending in Manhattan, takes the wheel of the exterior-designed Tribhuvan, owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Wonder Stables and Michael Caruso.
Another who raced in Manhattan for Brown was Master Piece, which finished sixth for owners Fernando Diaz-Valdes Stable, Baalbek Corp. and Don Alberto Stable. Winner of Group 2 in Chile, he landed an allowance at Keeneland this spring enters fourth place at last fall’s Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and Manhattan.
Brown’s last contestant, Peter Brant’s Serve the King, finished fourth in his only start this year in the Monmouth Stakes (G3T) on June 5.
Brown has won the UN three times, with his first coming in 2013.
Other UN threats include Fantastic , Winters back , and Glynn County .
The UN precedes the $ 1 million TVG Haskell Stakes (G1) on the Monmouth Saturday card as the 11th race at 5:12 p.m. ET.
